Frequently
Asked Questions
Q.
Can't anyone pressure wash my house?
A.
Yes, anyone can pressure wash your house, the question is, can they do
it correctly? There is more to cleaning a home than shooting
water on it.
Q.
Can my home be pressure washed?
A.
Yes it can. We use products designed to clean log and wood
structures. These products are safe and biodegradable.
We first look at the condition of your wood and stain before
deciding which product is suited best to clean your home.
Q.
How do you recommend my home be cleaned?
A.
We recommend cob blasting when possible. This process is safe
for the wood surface and biodegradable. But, more importantly,
it is safe for your home and leaves a dry, clean surface ready for
staining.
Q.
What is corn blasting?
A.
It is the use of corn cob grit as an abrasive to strip exterior finish
and prepare the surface for stain reapplication. Corn blasting
may sound primitive, but overall it is the most modern way to strip
existing treatments off your home. It leave logs dry and ready
for the next stage (no waiting around for other products to dry),
and prevents water damage both inside and outside your home from
other stripping processes like power washing. Clean up is
quick and easy and is done by simply blowing away excess material
because the media is biodegradable and recyclable. Corn
blasting is the most environmentally safe way to strip a home, and
working with natural products is important to Eagle Restoration.
Q.
What happens to the cob grit?
A. We
will either use a blower to disperse the grit or collect it.
Q. Do
you recommend oil or water based stains?
A.
There are several factors to consider before recommending any
particular stain. We will discuss what options you have after
we look at your home.
Q.
What about cracks and holes in the logs?
A. There actually is two very
different schools of thought regarding cracks in logs.
Caulking all cracks will hold moisture in and rot the logs from the
inside out. Leaving the natural cracks in the logs allows the
moisture to escape. If there are very large cracks or cracks
facing up, we would fill those, but through experience, we have
found that leaving the natural cracks is actually better for the
logs.
We are experienced and are very
aware of what each stain company says about maintaining homes with
their plethora of products. We have found that climate and
other factors determine what is best for the wood.
As the wood dries, it cracks; it
will do that with or without caulking; nothing is as powerful as
nature. All wood product companies recommend every possible
product they carry to sell these products. We have worked over
time to see what is really necessary so we do not oversell to our
clients. Feel free to discuss this with us.
Caulking is one area that we
are very subjective with as water will get into logs one way or
another eventually. We recommend pressure cleaning once a year
to remove mold or fungus buildup and at that time we check for log
rot.
Q.
Are there temperature and weather restrictions for the application
of the products?
A.
Yes, stain and finishes must be applied in temperatures between 40
and 90 degrees F.
Q. Can you
just use clear stain on logs and/or decking?
A.
You can, but we don't recommend it.
Q. Is
Eagle Restoration LLC insured?
A. Yes, we carry up to one million dollars, depending on the value of
home.
Q. How do I know if my
cabin needs to have a finish applied?
A. Squirt a small
amount of water on the logs in several different areas if
beads of water do not form on the surface, it needs finish.
Of course flaking and peeling also indicate a need for
refinishing.
